Today I went to support my friend Emily with her 'Pythia' band in Birminghams 'Asylum'. As a Baebes fan and lover of classical/ medieval music, I had a preconception that I wouldn't like it, how wrong I was. This was a festival of about 6 different groups all of varying quality. In this festival of Gothic Rock/ metal bands 2 bands stood out for me, ! was called 'Apparition' a midlands based band that had a very definitive sound and the other was Em's 'Pythia'. I met Em before the gig and she squeaked to me that she had Larengitis. So it was a miracle that she performed at all. When she hit the stage her squeaking disappeared and something sensational happened. She rocked and sang like her life depended upon it. I have been used to Em performing in Cathedrals and the contrast was amazing. She blew away the audience with her vocal versatility and shear energy. Throwing a glass of red wine over the audience may of been extreme but I thought that she had lost control of all her actions by then. After the gig we laughed and drank together and she gave me so much love. Em is a person who appreciates true support and inspite of my preconceptions I was so happy that I went to see her. I will definately support Pythia in future and recommend that all Baebes fans give them a chance, you won't be disappointed. Surprised, Yes but happily so. Si.
Just a little history for you Si, it was Apparition that had the Idea for the Dames of Darkness Festival, and the first one was last year.
at this years event there were several casualties, Keltic Jihads singer quit the group before the gig started. So the male members of the group
played on with no vocals ( so as not to let their fans down, to much )
and of course our own Emily with her vocal problems.
To-Mera, who were on after Pythia ( And I know you saw them briefly
because you shadowed Emily into the front stage area ) were just hopelessly out of form.
Hanging Doll were OK but To be honest I didn`t see enough of them to make a judgement on them. But it was a brilliant event, and I`de go again next year if a couple of decent bands are on the bill.
