The tale begins on the first American tour I ever did with the Baebes in 2007, when we were playing at the Maryland Renn Fair. We were staying at The Admiral Fell Inn in Baltimore, the most charming hotel, where all the staff are dressed as ghosts (based on real people who lived in the area around the time when the harbour was first opened) The architectural roots date back to the late 1770s and over the years the Inn has served as a ship chandlery, a theater, a boarding house for sailors and later, a Seaman’s YMCA.
One night Maxine, Pom and I were starving hungry and decided to order room service, imagine our surprise when we opened the door to find a ghost standing there with our food! He was the most lovely ghost, who played his part to perfection in his 18th Century costume (especially after a grilling from actress Maxine to make sure he was inside his character!) and gave us all a giggle into the bargain!
Wind forward to the following year, 2008 when we returned to America for our most recent tour. We had just finished a concert in Charlotte and were sitting round the signing table chatting with everyone, when a man came up to me with his daughter. He acted like he knew me, and I was wracking my brain, trying to think where I would know him from. Then, through the conversation it slowly transpired that he was my ghost! No wonder I hadnt recognised him without his wig and pale face
We had a great chat, and his daughter is a total sweetie!
Wind forward again to a couple of months ago when Pom came round my place and after one or two or three glasses of wine we decided to have a look on you tube at some of our hilarious mistakes captured on film at past gigs (yes there are some, but dont look them up!)
There amongst all our dresses and dance moves we found the sweetest video of a little girl singing "The Blacksmiths" in a fairy costume, complete with dancing and a wooden stick for a recorder, and yes, even though I'd had a glass of wine or four, I recognised her as the ghosts daughter!
Its moments like those, that make writing, playing and performing music all absolutely worth it. To see other people compelled to dance and sing and feel joy through music you've written is a truly humbling experience.
So for anyone who's curious to see what a ghosts daughter looks like, heres the link...
